Sus áreas de interés comprenden la ingeniería de materiales y los métodos modernos de manufactura. En la primera, el interés se enfoca en los materiales cerámicos con fines tantos estructurales, electróquímicos y biomédicos. En la segunda área su interés está centrado en las aplicaciones del láser a la manufactura: corte, soldadura, tratamientos térmicos y recubrimientos y síntesis de aleaciones con memoria de forma. Su experiencia académica, de investigación y práctica se extiende por más de 20 años. Lo anterior con el fin de buscar el aumento en el valor agregado de productos fabricados en Chile. Dentro de esta área también su interés se concentra en el desarrollo y aplicación de prototipos rápidos, en especial, los métodos Selective Laser Sintering, 3D PRINTING y FDM con énfasis en modelos anatómicos estereolitográficos de hueso. Recientemente ha comenzado a investigar en la modelación numérica de las propiedades mecánicas de los materiales a través de métodos ab-initio y semi-clásicos.
Desde el año 2005 es miembro invitado del CIRP y desde el 2006 forma parte del comité editorial del Rapid Prototyping Journal. Director y fundador del LATIL.
