Hernán Santa María O. recibió el PhD en Ingeniería Civil de University of Texas, Austin, en 2001, y el MS de la misma Universidad en 1997. Desde 1990 es Ingeniero Civil de la Universidad Católica de Chile, en la cual es Profesor de Ingeniería Estructural desde 2001. Entre 1990 y 1995 trabajó como ingeniero estructural en diversos proyectos de edificios de Hormigón Armado y Estructuras Metálicas. Actualmente participa como co-investigador principal en el proyecto Fondecyt "Four Optimal Design Problems in Civil Engineering".
